NAMM 2017
Afgelopen weekend vond NAMM plaats. In Anaheim, Californie om precies te zijn. Voor wie het niet kent: dit is een van de grootste handelsbeurzen voor muziekinstrumenten en -apparatuur. NAMM staat voor National Association of Music Merchants en zoals de naam al impliceert is het vooral gericht op bedrijven en professionals. Niet voor “gewone” bezoekers dus. Dat neemt niet weg dat het vaak een goede graadmeter is voor nieuwe ontwikkelingen op het gebied van muziek-mogelijkheden. Alles van gitaren en effecten tot DJ gear, synthesizers en controllers is er te vinden. De eerste grote beurs van het jaar, dus een geschikt moment voor veel bedrijven om er hun nieuwste snufjes te laten zien aan de wereld. Veel DJ’s en producers houden deze beurs daarom ook goed in de gaten: het geeft alvast een goed beeld welke nieuwe “gear” er op de markt gaat komen. In deze blog een greep uit interessante apparaten die er getoond werden, met het oog op DJ’s en producers in dit geval.
DJ Speelgoed
Laten we eens beginnen met DJ gear. Genoeg te zien op dat gebied. Dat het goede oude vinyl nog niet uitgestorven is bewijst onder andere Stanton. Naast wat instapmodellen presenteerden ze 2 updates van hun pro draaitafels: ST.150 M2 en STR8.150 M2. Deze modellen zijn vergelijkbaar, maar de laatst genoemde heeft een kaarsrechte toonarm, in tegenstelling tot de eerstgenoemde draaitafel. Typisch Stanton dingetje, die rechte toonarm. Niet prettig om mee te werken, vind ik zelf. Maar het is fijn om te zien dat er weer wat gerenommeerde bedrijven de platenspeler-markt serieus nemen. Technics was altijd de standaard, maar slaat de plank al enige tijd mis vanwege belachelijk te hoge prijzen voor hun “nieuwe” modellen.
Ander DJ nieuws: Denon doet een gooi naar de kroon op gebied van DJ media spelers met de SC5000. 
Qua uitstraling te vergelijken met Pioneer spelers, maar met een paar handige extra snufjes. Control knoppen voor o.a. cue op het onderste deel van de controller, interessante loop functies, en een enorm kleurendisplay. Ook wat goedkoper dan Pioneer’s paradepaardjes.
Gemini presenteerde een nieuwe all-in-one controller genaamd SDJ-4000 (video). 2 jogwheels, 4 kanalen en een heleboel knoppen. Verder een helder kleurenscherm en de mogelijkheid om diverse media aan te sluiten. Maar meest opvallend: het is een “stand-alone” apparaat. Je hebt dus geen computer nodig om met dit apparaat te werken.
DAW
Digital Audio Workstations, software om een volledig muziekstuk mee te maken. Zoals in mijn vorige blog al gemeld valt vooral Bitwig Studio 2 op. Door nieuwe mogelijkheden op gebied van aansluiting van analoge apparaten is het een stuk interessanter geworden voor de echte gear-fanaten. Duidelijk een grote stap in de juiste richting.
Nieuwe controllers voor DAW’s waren er ook. Presonus presenteerde de Faderport 8: 
een veel uitgebreidere variant op hun populaire Faderport controller, met 8 gemotoriseerde kanaal-faders en een flinke lading handige functie knoppen. Zoals de meeste Presonus controllers is dit apparaat geoptimaliseerd voor de eigen Studio One software, maar het werkt ook met de meeste andere software via Mackie/HUI protocollen. Gemini presenteerde naast de eerder genoemde DJ controller ook een DAW controller. De MAS-1 (video). Volgens de omschrijving vooral bedoeld als controller “clip-based software” zoals Ableton Live. Oogt wat beperkt en als “speelgoed”, maar we zullen zien of er vraag naar is.
Drums & samplers
Op gebied van synthesizers was er redelijk veel leuks te vinden. Weinig zeer baanbrekende zaken, maar voldoende interessante apparaten. Elektron presenteerde Digitakt: een digitale sampler en drumcomputer. Wat deze machine nog veel interessanter maakt is de mogelijkheid om tot 8 externe apparaten aan te sturen via de sequencer. Dit kan dus als hart van je live setup fungeren, zonder dat je een computer nodig hebt. Op dat gebied was er nog een zeer interessante speler: Akai. De beruchte MPC serie krijgt nieuwe toevoegingen in de vorm van MPC Live en MPC X. 
Beide nieuwe samplers/sequencers. Vooral de MPC X is een zeer uitgebreid apparaat: enigszins vergelijkbaar met Maschine Studio van Native Instruments, maar met een zeer belangrijk verschil. Deze Akai machines zijn volledig stand-alone te gebruiken. Zonder computer en met uitgebreide mogelijkheden om andere apparaten aan te sturen. Verre van goedkoop, maar erg interessant!
Synthesizers
Op gebied van synthesizers waren er wat mooie nieuwtjes. Dave Smith Instruments presenteerde de REV2, een vernieuwde kijk op de Prophet 08 polysynth van het zelfde bedrijf. Percussa liet de Synthor System 8 (video) zien: een digitale versie van een modulair systeem. Inclusief los te koppelen controller en extra mogelijkheden in de vorm van lichtgevende blokken die draadloos in verbinding staan met de rest van het systeem. Door de blokken te bewegen ten opzichte van elkaar kan de synthesizer worden aangestuurd. Ziet er in ieder geval erg mooi uit. Shear Electronics toonde een gloednieuwe analoge synthesizer, maar dan met volledig digitale interface. De Relic 6 (video) gebruikt dus het beste van 2 werelden. De bouwer van het apparaat is erg jong en schijnt al op zijn 15e aan deze synth te zijn begonnen. Veel nieuwe snufjes, maar met een behoorlijk prijskaartje. Het belooft wel veel moois voor de toekomst als je ziet wat zo’n jong mannetje nu al in elkaar tovert.
Als laatste een synthesizer van Pioneer. Ja, je hoort het goed, de marktleider voor DJ gear presenteert een synthesizer. Na sampler/DJ-effecten apparaat Toraiz SP-16 gaan ze een stapje verder met een monofone synthesizer. In samenwerking met Dave Smith Instruments brengen ze nu de Toraiz AS-1 op de markt. 
Volgens de omschrijving is de synth analoog en heeft een ingebouwde sequencer en arpeggiator. Het uiterlijk heeft een beetje een speelgoed uitstraling en het toetsenbord doet denken aan oude Roland apparaten zoals de TB-303. Voor een fatsoenlijke prijs kan het echter heel interessant zijn. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan soortgelijke apparaten zoals de populaire Volca reeks van Korg.
Tot Slot
Je ziet het, er gebeurt een heleboel in muziekland. En dan beperk ik me hier nog tot het DJ en producer gedeelte. Of alle gepresenteerde nieuwtjes ook daadwerkelijk op de markt komen moeten we zoals altijd afwachten. En of deze apparaten uberhaupt aanslaan al helemaal. Het feit dat er zoveel ontwikkelingen zijn is altijd goed! Duidelijke trend is te zien in stand-alone opties van veel nieuwe gear. Dus zonder computer te gebruiken. Analoge (live-)setups met enorm veel apparaten en kabels werden door de jaren heen vervangen door “in the box” systemen in de vorm van laptops met software. Ook op DJ gebied. Maar blijkbaar is er toch weer interesse in de “computer-loze” aanpak, getuige de ontwikkelingen van afgelopen jaren. We zullen zien waar het allemaal naartoe gaat. Maar dat er nog een heleboel mooie en vernieuwende ontwikkelingen aankomen is duidelijk. Dit zijn mooie tijden voor ons gear-freaks. Dus kom maar op met die nieuwe mogelijkheden!

NAMM 2017
Last weekend NAMM 2017 took place. In Anaheim, California, to be exact. For those of you that don’t know it: this is one of the biggest trade fairs for music instruments and gear. NAMM stands for National Association of Music Merchants and like the name implies it is aimed at industry professionals and companies. Not for “regular” visitors. But it is still a very good indicator for new developments in the field of music gear. Anything from guitars and effects to DJ gear, synthesizers and controllers can be found there. It is the first big event of the year too, so a great opportunity for companies to show their latest inventions to the rest of the world. Many DJ’s and producers keep an eye on this event: because it gives you a good idea of all the new gear that is about to hit the market. In this blog you can find some interesting gear for DJ’s and producers.
DJ Toys
Let’s start with some DJ gear. There was enough new stuff. Stanton proves that the vinyl market is not dead yet. Besides some beginner models they presented 2 updates to their pro turntable line: ST.150 M2 en STR8.150 M2. These models are comparable, but the STR8 has a straight arm and the ST features a curved arm. Typical Stanton thing, that straight tone arm. Personally I don’t like it at all. But it is good to see several well known companies take the turntable market serious. Technics has been the “standard” for years, but is not making any friends with the ridiculous pricing of their “new turntable models”
Other DJ news: Denon is going for the gold in the DJ media player category with the SC5000.
Comparable to Pioneer’s trademark players, but with some very cool extra features. Control buttons for cue and other functions, on the lower part of the controller. Added loop options and a big touchscreen complete the device. It will also be a bit cheaper than Pioneer’s top models.
Gemini presented a new all-in-one controller called SDJ-4000 (video). 2 jogwheels, 4 channels and a lot of buttons. It also has a big colour screen and the options to connect a wide range of data carriers. Most interesting: it is a “stand-alone” device. You don’t need a computer to use this device.
DAW
Digital Audio Workstations, software to make a complete track with. Like I mentioned in a previous blog one of the most interesting updates was Bitwig Studio 2. Especially the options for connecting and controlling analogue gear have made this DAW a lot more compatible for the real gear heads. Clearly they have put another big step in the right direction.
New controllers for DAW software were also available. Presones showed its Faderport 8:
an 8 channel big brother of their popular Faderport controller, with 8 motorized faders and a lot of useful function buttons. Like most Presonus controllers this device has been optimized for their own Studio One software, but it will also work with a variety of other software using the Mackie/HUI protocols. Besides the new DJ controller Gemini also presented a new DAW controller: the MAS-1 (video). According to the description this is aimed at “clip based software” like Ableton Live. It does look a lot like a “toy”, if you ask me, but time will tell if there’s a market for this.
Drums & samplers
In the world of drum machines and samplers there was a lot of interesting new stuff. Not that many truly groundbreaking devices, but enough interesting machines nevertheless. Elektron presented Digitakt: a digital sampler and drum machine. What makes this device even more interesting is the fact that it can control up to 8 external devices through the built-in sequencer. It can form the heart of your live setup and you won’t need a computer to use it. In the same category there was another very interesting player: Akai. Famous for their MPC series. They just added the MPC Live and MPC X.
Both are new samplers/sequencers. Especially the MPC X is a very impressive device. Somewhat comparable to Maschine Studio by Native Instruments, but with a very important difference. These Akai machines can be used stand-alone. No computer needed, but still with a lot of cool possibilities to control external devices. Far from affordable, but also very interesting!
Synthesizers
In the synthesizer department there were also some innovative new features. Dave Smith Instruments presented the REV2, a new version of the Prophet 08 polysynth by the same company. Percussa showed the Synthor System 8 (video): a digital version of a modular system. Including a separate controller and extra control options in the form of illuminated cubes that connect to the rest of the system through a wireless network. By moving the cubes around you can control sounds in the synthesizer. It looks very nice. Shear Electronics presented a brand new analogue synthesizer, but with a fully digital interface. The Relic 6 (video) combines the best of both worlds. The guy that built it is still very young and seems to have started on this machine when he was only 15 years old. A lot of new features, but with quite a high price. It does however feel very promising for the future if you realize what this young man ahs already come up with at this young age.
Finally, a synthesizer by Pioneer. Yes, you heard it correctly: the leader in the DJ gear market brings us a synthesizer. After sample/DJ effects device Toraiz SP-16 they go one step further with a monophonic synthesizer.
Collaborating with Dave Smith Instruments they will release the Toraiz AS-1. It is described as a fully analogue synth with built-in sequencer and arpeggiator. Its appearance is a bit toy-like and the interface reminds me of old Roland devices like the TB-303. For a reasonable price however, this device might be interesting. Think of similar synths like the popular Volca machines by Korg.
And Finally
As you can see, there’s enough going on in the world of music. And I’m only talking about the DJ and producer part here. Wether all the presented new gear will make it to the actual consumer market is never certain. If the devices will become popular is even less certain. But just the fact that there are so many new developments is a good thing! There’s a clear trend in stand-alone functionality of a lot of gear. So no computers needed. Analogue (live-)setups with huge amounts of gear and cables were replaced by more “on the box” systems in the form of laptop computers and software over the years. Same thing goes for DJ’s. But apparently there is a growing demand for the “computer-less” approach. We will have to wait and see where it all goes from here. But we can be sure there is still a lot of very cool and new stuff coming our way. Good times for us gear freaks. So bring on the future!
