10 apps voor DAW controle
Het betreft hier voornamelijk IOS apps aangezien er gewoon veel te weinig soortgelijke mogelijkheden zijn op bijvoorbeeld het Android platform. In een eerdere blog heb ik het al eens gehad over de uiteenlopende opties bij het maken van muziek. Aangevuld met een blog over MIDI controllers in het algemeen.
Maar eerst even wat achtergrondinformatie. We nemen al die mogelijkheden op gebied van apps en touch-screens gewoon voor lief: nog niet zo lang geleden was dit echter toekomstmuziek. Voor de opkomst van tablets met touch-screens was er eigenlijk maar 1 apparaat beschikbaar op gebied van MIDI controllers: Lemur, van het bedrijf Jazzmutant.
Dit apparaat was destijds een revolutionair ding. Volledige controle over je DAW in de vorm van een touch-screen + de mogelijkheid om de layout geheel naar wens aan te passen. Maar daar hing wel een prijskaartje aan. Met een winkelprijs van ruim boven de 1000 Euro was dit niet echt een betaalbaar speeltje voor de meeste producers. Grote namen als Bjork en Richie Hawtin zagen echter wel degelijk potentie in deze technologie en gebruikten het apparaat veelvuldig in hun optredens. Totdat daar ineens de Ipad was.
De komst van de Ipad en de bijbehorende populariteit van tablets heeft veel veranderd. Ineens was het mogelijk om een touch-screen tablet aan te schaffen voor minder dan de helft van een Lemur controller. Combineer dat met een geschikte (betaalbare) app en je hebt een volwaardige vervanger. Daarmee werd een baanbrekend apparaat in 1 klap gereduceerd tot een duur luxe product. Ontwikkelaars zagen al snel mogelijkheden en er kwamen steeds meer soortgelijke apps op de markt. Het lijstje hieronder bevat apps die specifiek voor bepaalde software zijn, maar ook apps die multi inzetbaar zijn.
1) Lemur App (Liine)
Wel zo eerlijk om meteen maar te beginnen met de app versie van Lemur. Overgenomen door het bedrijf Liine. Deze versie biedt dezelfde functionaliteit als zijn hardware voorganger en meer. Werkt met vrijwel alle apparaten die MIDI of OSC protocol kunnen omgaan. Breed inzetbaar dus. Huidige prijs is 24,99 Euro en de software schijnt zelfs nog op de eerste generatie Ipads te werken. 2) DAW Control (Vitaliy Tarasyuk)
Deze app is wat simpeler qua mogelijkheden. Zoals de naam al impliceert is het bedoeld als controller voor je DAW. Voor Ableton Live en Logic zitten er afgestemde presets in. Inmiddels aangevuld met presets voor o.a. Reason, Pro Tools en Reaper. Maar het werkt met nog veel meer soortgelijke software en is compatible met zowel Mac als Windows. Ook een van mijn persoonlijke favorieten, omdat de layout erg veel lijkt op professionele hardware controllers van weleer, zoals die van Mackie en Tascam. Transport controls, een 8 kanaals mixer, jogwheel en een hele reeks aan sneltoetsen. Huidige prijs is slechts 2,99 Euro, dus veel goedkoper ga je het niet krijgen. Bekijk ‘m in de App Store.
3) Touch OSC (Hexler)
Nog een persoonlijke favoriet: Touch OSC kan zich prima meten met aanzienlijk duurdere concurrenten als Lemur. MIDI via wifi en te gebruiken met vrijwel alles. Bijgeleverde templates zijn handig: te gebruiken als DJ controller, sequencer of om bijvoorbeeld clips in Ableton Live af te spelen. Ook biedt Hexler een gratis editor aan om je eigen ideale controller te maken. En ook nog eens op Android te gebruiken! Huidige prijs is 4,99 Euro. Alle info vind je op de Hexler site.
4) Logic Remote (Apple)
Zoals de naam al aangeeft: deze controller is specifiek bedoeld voor Logic X. Te gebruiken als volwaardige midi controller via een draadloos netwerk of via Bluetooth. Bevat een slimme help functie voor Logic en zelfs de mogelijkheid om een heleboel functies onder sneltoetsen te plaatsen. En de prijs? Helemaal gratis! Bezit je dus Logic X en een ipad? Dan moet je deze zeker eens proberen. Verkrijgbaar in de App Store.
5) Cubase IC Pro (Steinberg)
Specifiek bedoeld voor Cubase. Steinberg, onder andere uitvinder van het vst protocol, loopt ook al heel wat jaren mee. Spreekt dus voor zich dat ze ook een controller app hebben voor hun beroemde Cubase DAW. IC Pro biedt volledige controle over de mixer, transport controls en effecten. Verder ook een zelf in te stellen hoeveelheid sneltoetsen, vergelijkbaar met de hierboven genoemde Logic Remote. Deze app is ook in een gratis variant te krijgen trouwens: Cubase IC. Een stuk minder uitgebreid dan de Pro versie die je 16,99 Euro kost. Meer info vind je op de Steinberg site.
6) DAW Remote (EUM Lab)
Nog zo’n multi inzetbare controller app. Te gebruiken met vrijwel alle grote spelers in DAW land inclusief bijbehorende presets. En ook hier de mogelijkheid om zelf de layout te maken voor je eigen ideale controller. Niet zo uitgebreid als veel andere apps. Maar de brede inzetbaarheid maakt veel goed. Huidige prijs is 9,99 euro voor de standaard versie of 14,99 Euro voor de HD variant. Info vind je op hun website.
7) rsTouch Pro (Harmony Systems)
Reason kan natuurlijk niet achterblijven. Ook hiervoor is een zeer uitgebreide controller app verkrijgbaar. Volledige controle over de mixer en effecten, te gebruiken als drumpad en ook nog eens meer dan 100 kant-en-klare presets voor de zogenaamde “rack devices” die je in Reason kunt gebruiken. Deze Pro versie kost je 19,99 Euro, maar daar krijg je veel voor terug! Deze ontwikkelaar biedt trouwens ook controllers voor Logic en GarageBand aan. Aanvullende info vind je op deze website.
8) EyoControl (Eyosido)
Relatief simpele midi controller app. Maar wel breed inzetbaar en betaalbaar. Voor 5,99 Euro krijg je transport controls, mixer controls, een klavier, drumpads en een zogenaamde X/Y controller die naar wens is in te stellen. Meer info over deze app vind je op de website van de ontwikkelaar.
9) Conductr (Patchworks)
Deze app is behoorlijk populair dit jaar. Geschikt als controller voor Ableton Live en Native Instruments Traktor. De app zelf is gratis te downloaden. Maar verkijk je daar niet op. Om de volwaardige functionaliteit van Ableton Live te kunnen gebruiken moet je namelijk een extra aankoop in de app doen. En dat kost je ineens 23,99 Euro. De Traktor variant kost je 8,99 Euro. Al met al niet bepaald goedkoop. Conductr is echter zeer stabiel, heeft een overzichtelijk interface en is aan te passen aan je eigen wensen. Kijk voor meer info op de Conductr site.
10) Touch-Able 3(AppBC)
Tot slot, mijn absolute persoonlijke favoriet. Alleen gericht op gebruik bij Ableton Live, weliswaar. Voorgaande versies waren een stuk minder geslaagd. De laatste versie is echter gewoon geniaal. De app zelf kost je 19,99 Euro, maar als je de volledige mogelijkheden voor Live wilt hebben kost je dat nog een keer 14,99 Euro. Niet goedkoop. Maar persoonlijk heb geen enkele controller app kunnen vinden die ook maar in de buurt komt van deze functionaliteit. Triggeren van clips, mixer controls, controle over Live’s eigen plugins door middel van een vrijwel 1 op 1 nagebootste layout per effect, pad controller die vergelijkbaar is met die van Push, drumpads/klavier en geheel zelf in te stellen X/Y controls. Kers op de taart is wat mij betreft de mogelijkheid om Live’s browser aan te sturen en vanaf je ipad instrumenten effecten of plugins te laden. Ideaal voor onderweg, omdat je je muis vrijwel niet meer nodig hebt. Alle info vind je op de Touch-Able site.
Tot Slot
Het moge duidelijk zijn: dit is slechts een klein deel van alle beschikbare controllers voor de ipad. En die ontwikkeling gaat maar door. In mijn keuze heb ik geprobeerd om een breed overzicht te geven. Niet alleen om deze apps te laten zien, maar vooral ook om duidelijk te maken wat er mogelijk is! De keuze hangt vooral af van de door jou gebruikte software, je eigen wensen en je budget. Maar als je een tablet hebt kan ik je zeer aanraden om eens wat touch controllers uit te proberen. Het zorgt voor een interessante manier van muziek maken en is in ieder geval een stuk betaalbaarder dan veel high-end controllers. Wie weet breng ik je hiermee op een goed idee.

10 apps for DAW control.
This mainly contains IOS apps, because there are simply not enough similar apps on other platforms, like Android. In a previous blog I already talked about the many options of mobile devices in making music. And there’s also a blog on midi controllers in general.
But first some background information. We tend to forget how lucky we are nowadays when it comes to all the possibilities of apps and touch screens. It wasn’t too long ago, however, when all of these options were only a futuristic idea. Before the rise of tablets and touch screens there was basically just one option available as a touch MIDI controller: Lemur, made by the Jazzmutant company.
This device was a revolutionary piece of equipment back then. Full control over your DAW in the form of a touch screen and the option to completely customize the layout. And that didn’t come cheap either. With a price of well over 1000 Euros this wasn’t a very affordable toy for most producers. Big names like Bjork and Richie Hawtin clearly saw the potential of this system though, and used it a lot in their live shows. Until the Ipad suddenly appeared.
The introduction of the Ipad and the popularity of tablets that followed were game changers. Suddenly you could buy a tablet for less than half the price of a Lemur controller. Combine that with several (affordable) apps and you have a great alternative. This development reduced this once groundbreaking controller to an overpriced luxury item in a single blow. Developers soon saw the potential and more similar apps found their way to the users. The list in this blog contains some apps that were made for specific software, but there are also some multi functional ones in there.
1) Lemur App (Liine)
It is fair to start with the app version of Lemur. Incorporated by the Liine company. This version offers the same options as its hardware predecessor and more. It works with any device that can receive MIDI or OSC protocol. A wide range of possibilities. The current price is 24,99 Euro and the software seems to even work with the first generation of Ipads. 2) DAW Control (Vitaliy Tarasyuk)
This app is a bit simpler. But as the name already implies this is also a DAW controller. It includes presets for Ableton Live and Logic, and has additional presets for Reason, Pro Tools and Reaper. Besides that it can work with a range of other software too, Windows or Mac. Also one of my personal favourites because the layout looks a lot like professional hardware controllers from the past, like Mackie or Tascam used to make. Transport comtrols, an 8-channel mixer, jogwheel and a wide range of shortcut buttons. Current price is only 2,99 Euro, so you won’t get similar controls much cheaper. Check it out at the App Store.
3) Touch OSC (Hexler)
Another personal favourite: Touch OSC can easily compete with similar but more expensive apps like Lemur. MIDI over wifi and compatible with nearly everything. The internal templates are quite useful too: to use it as a DJ controller, sequencer or for triggering clips in Ableton Live. Hexler also offers a free editor to design your own perfect controller layout. Available for Android too! Current price is 4,99 Euro. All additional info can be found on the Hexler site.
4) Logic Remote (Apple)
Like the name already says: this controller is specifically for Logic X. It can be used as a full midi controller via both wifi and Bluetooth. Contains a smart help function for Logic and the ability to control many shortcut functions under separate custom buttons. And the price? Completely free! So if you use Logic X and also own an Ipad you should try this one. Available at the App Store.
5) Cubase IC Pro (Steinberg)
Specifically designed for Cubase. Steinberg, inventor of the vst protocol, has been around for quite some time. So it goes without saying they also have a dedicated controller app for their famous Cubase DAW. IC Pro offers full control over the mixer, transport controls and effects. It also allows you to add your own shortcut buttons (similar to the Logic controller). This app also comes as a free version called Cubase IC. This has a lot less options than the Pro version. IC Pro will cost you 16,99 Euro. More info on the Steinberg site.
6) DAW Remote (EUM Lab)
Another multi compatible controller app. Can be combined with most of the big DAWs and already includes many presets. Again, there is an option to design your own ideal layout. Not the same amount of options most other apps have. But being able to use it with many different programs makes up for that. Current price is 9,99 Euro for the HD version. 7) rsTouch Pro (Harmony Systems)
We can’t leave Reason out of this. This is a very complete controller app. Full control of the mixer and effects, control of drumpads and also over 100 ready-to-use presets for the so-called “rack devices” that you can add to Reason. The Pro version will set you back 19,99 Euro, but you get a lot in return! The same developer also offers control apps for Logic and GarageBand. Check out some additional info on the website.
8) EyoControl (Eyosido)
Relatively simple midi controller app. But with a wide variety of uses and affordable too. For 5,99 Euro you get transport controls, mixer control, a piano rol, drum pads and a so-called X/Y controller you can customize. More info on this app is available on the website of the developer.
9) Conductr (Patchworks)
One of the more popular apps this year. Can be used as a controller for Ableton Live and Native Instruments Traktor. The app itself is free. But make no mistake: to be able to get the full functionality for Ableton Live you will need to do an in-app purchase of 23,99 Euro. Using Traktor will cost you an additional 8,99 Euro. Not exactly cheap. But Conductr is very stable, has a clear interface and can be customized to your needs. Find out more on the Conductr site.
10) Touch-Able 3(AppBC)
The last one: my absolute personal favourite. Aimed only at Ableton Live users. Previous versions were far from perfect. But this last version is just genious. The app itself costs 19,99 Euros. But if you want the full potential including all presets for Live you will have to buy the additional pack for 14,99 Euro. Not cheap, I know. But personally I have yet to discover any app that even comes close to this one. Triggering clips, mixer controls, control of Live’s internal devices through a one-on-one device layout, a pad controller that is comparable to that of Push, drum pads/keys and a fully customizable X/Y controller. The icing on the cake is this: you can also access Live’s browser from within the app and load all devices and effects. Perfect for working on-the-road, since it almost completely replaces your mouse. All the info is available on the Touch-Able site.
And Finally
It goes without saying that this list of apps covers only a small part of all the available controllers for Ipad. And the amount keeps growing. When choosing suitable apps for this list I tried to keep the selection as wide as possible. And not just to show you these apps, but to give you an idea of all the possibilities! Choosing a suitable app depends on the DAW you use, your personal demands and budget. But if you already own a tablet or want to buy one I really urge you to try some touch controllers. It adds some interesting features to the way you make music and it is definitely a lot cheaper than many high-end controllers. Who knows, you just might find the right one here.
