10 Tips Voor Gratis Sample Packs
Met enige regelmaat vind je hier in deze blogs lijstjes met gratis software en plug-ins voor het maken van muziek. Synthesizers, effecten, “audio tools” en meer van dat soort zaken. Erg leuk natuurlijk, die digitale mogelijkheden. Een volledige virtuele studio in je laptop of desktop computer. Het heeft enorme invloed op de ontwikkeling van diverse muziekstijlen. Maar door al die verleidelijke apparaten vergeten we wel eens dat er meer is dan synthesizers en effecten.
Hiermee doel ik vooral op gebruik van zogenaamde “samples”. Geluidsbestanden waarmee je een muziekstuk kunt maken. Losse elementen die samengevoegd of bewerkt kunnen worden tot iets nieuws. Creatief gebruik van samples is een ware kunst en gebruik van apparaten of software die bedoeld zijn voor sample-bewerking (de zogenaamde samplers) vergt vaak enige oefening.
Allemaal leuk en aardig, maar waar haal je nou eigenlijk goede samples vandaan? Bij de meeste DAW software krijg je een hele lading aan samples meegeleverd. Hoge kwaliteit, maar vaak een redelijk beperkt aanbod. Zelf geluid opnemen is ook een optie, maar dit vergt weer wat kennis en goede apparatuur. Zelf al je sounds maken met synthesizers kan natuurlijk ook. Als je over wat geschikte apparatuur beschikt.
En dan zijn er nog zogenaamde sample-packs. Collecties met uiteenlopende soorten samples, vaak op redelijk hoge kwaliteit. Tegen betaling aan te schaffen op gespecialiseerde websites, maar soms ook gratis. Het internet is een bijna onuitputtelijke bron van samples. Om je op weg te helpen heb ik hieronder een paar geweldige gratis sample-packs uitgezocht. Hopelijk zit er wat leuks voor je tussen!
1) Legowelt Sample Packs
Misschien niet bij iedereen bekend, maar bij de liefhebbers van de wat obscuurdere elektronische muziek is Legowelt een begrip. Danny Wolfers, de man achter Legowelt, heeft een grote liefde voor “vintage” apparatuur. En hij biedt een flinke hoeveelheid samples van diezelfde apparatuur aan. Helemaal voor niks! Neem een kijkje op zijn website voor alle downloads. Zeer de moeite waard.
2) Ableton Packs
Wanneer je Ableton Live aanschaft krijg je er een enorme hoeveelheid gratis samples bij. Maar wat veel gebruikers niet weten, of gewoon vergeten, is dat Ableton met regelmaat nieuwe sample packs aanbiedt op de website. Een deel daarvan kost geld, maar er is ook een behoorlijke hoeveelheid gratis packs te vinden! Hoge kwaliteit, zeer uiteenlopende keus. Bekijk ze allemaal op de Ableton site.
3) Boxed Ear Packs
Boxed Ear maakt onder andere zogenaamde “patches” voor hardware synthesizers. Maar ze leveren ook geregeld geweldige sample packs. En een deel daarvan is gratis. Geen enorm grote packs, maar wel met zeer hoge kwaliteit en het karakter van diverse bekende en minder bekende apparaten. Kijk eens op hun pagina met gratis packs.
4) Beta Monkey Drumloops
Een redelijk bekende aanbieder van (akoestische) drum samples en loops. Opgenomen in goede studio’s en in verschillende stijlen. De meeste packs krijg je tegen betaling, maar als je goed zoekt vind je ook wat gratis packs/samples. Hoe dan ook de moeite waard, zeker als je op zoek bent naar akoestische drums van hoge kwaliteit. 5) Rhythm Lab Packs
Verzamel website met zeer uiteenlopende sample packs. En er zijn een heleboel juweeltjes te vinden in de gratis categorie. Bekijk ze allemaal op rhythm-lab.com. Gebruik de filter functie rechts op de pagina om alle gratis packs op een rijtje te zetten.
6) Goldbaby Packs
Goldbaby zal velen van jullie bekend voorkomen. Een gevestigde naam op gebied van sample packs. Het aanbod is enorm en van hoge kwaliteit. En uiteraard is er ook een gedeelte met gratis packs. Kijk vooral even of er iets voor je tussen zit op de Goldbaby website.
7) Samplephonics Packs
Ook geen onbekende in de wereld van sample packs. Website is zeer overzichtelijk en het aanbod is flink! En niet te vergeten: een behoorlijke hoeveelheid gratis packs van hoge kwaliteit. Alle gratis Samplephonics packs vind je hier.
8) SoundPacks.com
Ook een interessante website met grote hoeveelheden samples. Het gratis aanbod is behoorlijk groot: Bekijk het overzicht van gratis Soundpacks samples.
9) Sample Magic Packs
Weer een redelijk bekende sample site. Maar zeker de moeite waard als je op zoek bent naar hoge kwaliteit voor een redelijke prijs. Ze bieden geregeld gratis samples aan: Samplemagic packs. Al was het maar voor de gratis 909 en 808 drumcomputer packs; sounds die elke producer zou moeten hebben. Je moet je wel registreren, maar het levert je zeker wat goeie samples op!
10) Music Radar Packs
En tot slot een lading gratis loops en samples waar geen einde aan lijkt te komen. Bekende muziek-productie tijdschriften zoals Computer Music of Future Music bieden flinke hoeveelheden gratis samples aan hun abonnees. Tot Slot
De hier genoemde sites zijn slechts een heel klein deel van het totale aanbod. Maar net als bij plug-ins geldt: hark niet zomaar alles binnen, maar wees kritisch. Gebruik zoveel mogelijk samples van hoge kwaliteit, richt je vooral op sounds die voor jou nuttig kunnen zijn. Is het niks? Gooi het dan van je computer af om te voorkomen dat alles vol raakt met nutteloze samples. Maar dat er genoeg kwaliteit te vinden is, ook gratis, moge duidelijk zijn! Less is more!

10 Tips For Free Sample Packs
In this blog you can find a list of free software and plug-ins every now and then. Synthesizers, effects, audio tools, that kind of thing. Great of course, all those digital options. A full virtual studio inside your laptop or desktop computer. This also had a great impact on the development of many styles of music. But the huge amount of possibilities sometimes makes us forget there’s more than synthesizers and effects.
In this case I’m talking about “samples”. Audio files that you can use to make a piece of music. Separate elements that can be combined or edited to create something new. Creative sampling is a true art form and the use of dedicated sampling hardware or software (usually called “samplers”) takes some practice.
All very nice, but where do you get good quality sample material? Most DAW software comes with a decent amount of samples. High quality too. But there usually isn’t a lot of variation. Recording your own material would be an option too, but requires more knowledge and equipment. Making your own sounds using synthesizers is a possibility. If you own suitable gear to do so, that is.
And then there’s the so-called sample packs. Collections of sample material containing a wide variety of sounds at high quality. You could buy sample packs from several specialized websites, but sometimes you can get stuff for free. The internet is a neverending source of nice samples. To get you going I’ve gathered some great free sample packs. Hopefully there’s something useful in there for you too!
1) Legowelt Sample Packs
This name might not ring a bell for most, but lovers of the more obscure electro music will definitely know who this is. Danny Wolfers, the man behind Legowelt, really loves “vintage” gear. And he offers a big amount of great samples, recorded from a lot of his own gear. Completely free! Have a look at his website for all downloads. Definitely worth it.
2) Ableton Packs
When you buy Ableton Live you also get a large amount of free samples with the software. But what many users don’t seem to know is that Ableton offers new packs on their website every now and then. Some packs will cost you money, but there are also a lot of great free packs available! High quality, a lot of choice. Check them all out on the Ableton site.
3) Boxed Ear Packs
Boxed Ear makes “patches” for (hardware) synthesizers. But they also offer good sample packs. And some of those packs are free. No huge amounts of samples here. But all very high quality and with a lot of character, sampled from well known and less known machines. Find out more about these free packs.
4) Beta Monkey Drumloops
Fairly well known website that mainly offers (acoustic) drum samples and loops. All recorded in good studios and containing a wide variety of styles. For most packs you have to pay, but if you search a bit further you will also find some free stuff. Worth the effort, especially if you need some high quality acoustic drums. 5) Rhythm Lab Packs
A website that has many collections of sample packs. You can find a lot of gems in the free sample section too. Check them all out on rhythm-lab.com. Use the filter function on the right to get a list of all the free packs.
6) Goldbaby Packs
Goldbaby is probably a name you’ve seen before. A well known name when it comes to samples packs. A huge amount of samples at very high quality, including a section with free packs. Make sure you take a look at the Goldbaby website.
7) Samplephonics Packs
No stranger to the world of sample packs either. This website offers quite a large amount of samples! And there are also some free packs in there at high quality. A full list of free Samplephonics packs can be found here.
8) SoundPacks.com
Another interesting website with large amounts of samples. The amount of free packs is very nice: take a look at this list of Soundpacks samples.
9) Sample Magic Packs
Another well known sample website. And again well worth it if you are looking for a good quality – price ratio. They also offer free samples on a regular basis: Samplemagic packs. Take a look, even if it was only for their free 909 en 808 drum computer packs; some samples every producer should have. You will have to register, but it will definitely get you some very good samples!
10) Music Radar Packs
And finally a seemingly endless amount of free loops and samples. Well known music magazines like Computer Music and Future Music offer free high quality samples every month for their subscribers. And Finally
The websites I mentioned here are just a small part of the total amount of nice samples you can find online, of course. And just like plug-ins, there’s one important thing to remember: don’t just download everything. Choose wisely, try to use samples of the highest quality and look for sounds that are useful for your music. Sounds bad? Make sure you delete those files from your computer to avoid a clutter of useless or bad samples. One thing is sure, however: there is definitely enough quality stuff ot there!
