Hoe maak je je eigen muziek?

Hai, ik ben Richard en ben leraar Ableton en Maschine bij DJ School Utrecht en ik ga leuke,
handige en interessante blogs voor jullie schrijven.
Het heeft even geduurd, en ik heb er lang over moeten denken om een geschikt onderwerp
te verzinnen. Maar aangezien het de bedoeling is om uiteenlopende onderwerpen te
behandelen die spelen in de muziekwereld, gewoon interessant zijn, of nuttig zijn voor
(beginnende) producers en DJ’s, leek het me een goed idee om met de basis te beginnen.
Hoe begin je eigenlijk met het maken van je eigen muziek?
De vraag die elke producer zichzelf ooit zal hebben gesteld, in welke vorm dan ook.
Het makkelijkste antwoord op die vraag is: schaf een instrument aan.
Maar zo simpel ligt het in de wereld van (elektronische) muziekproductie niet altijd.
Want een moderne producer moet van vele markten thuis zijn, en kan zich vaak niet
beperken tot 1 enkele vaardigheid. Zeker niet wanneer je de uiteenlopende mogelijkheden
ziet. Er is veel gebeurd op technisch gebied, de opties lijken oneindig.
En iedereen die je vraagt lijkt er een andere mening over te hebben. Dus waar begin je?
Laat ik beginnen met het intrappen van een open deur: je moet het WILLEN!
Dit lijkt een voor de hand liggende opmerking, maar er zit meer achter. Leren om je eigen
tracks te maken kost namelijk veel tijd en moeite: die tijd en moeite moet je er ook in
kunnen en willen steken. Het helpt dus wel degelijk als je het gewoon graag wilt!
Welke DAW is het best voor mij?
Daarnaast heb je uiteraard “gereedschap” nodig. Naast aanschaf van een geschikte computer
of laptop begin je in de meeste gevallen dus met het kiezen van een zogenaamde DAW.
Een DAW is een Digital Audio Workstation, oftewel software waarmee je van begin tot eind
een volledige track kunt maken.
Denk hierbij aan bekende software als Logic, Reason, FL Studio, Studio One, Maschine, Cubase of Ableton Live. Maar er is nog
veel meer keus, en het aanbod blijft groeien!
Hoe kies je nou het juiste gereedschap? Ook daar kan ik redelijk kort over zijn: kies het
gereedschap dat het best past bij jouw manier van werken.
Ik noem het met opzet “gereedschap”, omdat het slechts een middel is om je muziek mee te
maken.
De een heeft voorkeur voor software A, de ander voor software B. Dat zegt niks over hoe
goed of slecht die software is!
De eindeloze discussie over wat beter is, merk A of B, komt vaak voorbij. Maar mijn
persoonlijke mening is, dat dit er eigenlijk niet zo heel veel toe doet, mits die gekozen
software je gewoon in staat stelt om ermee te doen wat je in gedachten had.
Vrijwel alle DAW’s bieden de mogelijkheid om een trial-versie te installeren. Dit is dus een
goede eerste stap: probeer er gewoon een paar uit, en kijk of het iets voor jou is.
Probeer op je gevoel af te gaan, en realiseer je dat je altijd over kunt stappen. Maar je moet
ergens beginnen, nietwaar?
Staar je niet blind op meningen van anderen; onder de streep blijft het gereedschap. En een
goede producer kan zelfs met “gebrekkig” gereedschap een goed resultaat behalen.
Hoe nu verder?
Je hebt nu een geschikte computer en muziekproductie-software; en dan?
Dan begint het plezier pas echt! Want er gaat een wereld aan mogelijkheden voor je open,
dat is zeker!
De eerstvolgende stap is er 1 die weer voor de hand lijkt te liggen. Lees de handleiding!
Klinkt logisch, toch? Maar in de praktijk loop ik er zo vaak tegenaan dat het toch iets is om
hier te noemen. Die handleiding bevat vaak de basisbeginselen die je nodig hebt om aan de
slag te kunnen, ook al is het vaak nog een vreemde wereld met een heleboel info en
onbegrijpelijke termen. Het bekijken van tutorials kan daarbij ook erg nuttig zijn.
Uiteraard zijn de zaken die ik hier noem slechts het topje van de ijsberg. Alle begin is
moeilijk. Maar het begin is er in ieder geval, en daar gaat het om!
Tot slot is er dus de mogelijkheid om les te volgen!
Dit kan in de vorm van een volledige opleiding, maar uiteraard ook in de vorm van cursussen/lessen. Hoe je het ook aanpakt, je
zult er tijd en oefening in moeten steken.

voor hulp bij de keuze van een DAW. En zoals ik hierboven al aangaf: dat zijn de eerste
stappen naar een wereld van geweldige mogelijkheden waarin je al je creatieve muzikale
uitspattingen kwijt kunt!

How do you make your own music?

Here it is! The first blog for DJ School Utrecht.
Hi, my name is Richard and I teach Ableton Live and Maschine courses at DJ School Utrecht. I will be writing some blogs about making music, good tips and interesting developments in the world of electronic music production.
It took me a while, and I had tot think for some time to find a suitable first subject. Since the whole idea of this blog is to talk about a wide variety of subjects that have to do with music, interesting stuff or things that might be useful to aspiring dj’s and producers, it seemed like a good idea to actually start with the basics.
How do you even start making your own music?
Every producer out there will probably have asked the same question at one point or another. The easiest answer tot hat question would be: get yourself an instrument. But it is not quite that simple in the world of (electronic) music production. A modern producer has to be a jack of many trades and can’t be limited to one single skill. Especially when you look at all the different options that are available nowadays.
There has been a lot of technical development over the last years and the options seem endless. So where to start? Let me begin with one of the most obvious things: you have to WANT it! This might seem obvious, but there is more to it. Learning to make your own music on a computer takes a lot of time and effort; and you will need both that time and effort to practice your skills. So it really does help if you actually want to achieve it!
What DAW is the best choice for me?
Of course you will need some “tools” too. Besides buying a suitable computer or laptop, in most cases you start by choosing a so-called DAW. A DAW is a Digital Audio Workstation. In other words: software that helps you create a full track from start to finish. Think of well known software like Logic, Reason, Studio One, Cubase, Maschine, FL Studio or Ableton Live. But there are many more options out there, and the amount keeps on growing. But how do you find the right tool for you? The easy answer is: choose the tools that fit your needs and workflow best. I call it a “tool” for a reason: it is merely a tool for making your own music. Some people prefer software A, others prefer software B. It says nothing about the quality of that software! That endless discussion about what is better, brand A or B, keeps coming back. My personal opinion, however, is that it does not really matter too much, as long as the software you choose enables you to get the results you are after.
Practically every DAW offers the option to install a trial version. This is a good first step: try a few and see what you like best. Try to follow your first impression and always keep in mind that you can swith to a different tool any time. But you have to start somewhere, right? Don’t get lost in the opinions of others: when all is said and done, it is still a tool. Besides, a good producer is able to get good results even with “limited” tools
Now what?
So, you have a reasonable computer and some music production software. Now what? Well, that is where the real fun starts! Because there is a whole new world of possibilities in front of you, that much is certain! The next step is, again, quite an obvious one. Read the manual! Sounds logical, right? Still, I run into so many starting producers that don’t do this, that I have to mention it here anyway. That manual contains many basic principles you need to get started, even if it is still a strange new world with loads of info and unfamiliar terms. So the manual is definitely a useful start. Watching some tutorials is also a good idea.
Of course the stuff I am telling you about is only the tip of the iceberg. It is always hard to start something completely new. But at least you actually got started, that is the most important part!
Last but not least there is always the option to take lessons!
This could be a full education, but also courses/separate lessons. No matter what path you choose, you will always have to put a lot of time and effort into it. And like I said before: those are the first steps towards a world of fantastic possibilities for all your creative musical ideas!
