Bitwig Studio 2
In 2014 zag Bitwig Studio het levenslicht. Een DAW die op veel gebieden grote gelijkenis vertoonde met Ableton’s Live. Niet zo gek ook, want enkele van de ontwikkelaars van Bitwig zijn voormalig medewerkers van Ableton, die vonden dat er wat dingen ontbraken of anders moesten. En dus ontwikkelden ze deze software. Tot nu toe zijn er weinig grote of ingrijpende updates geweest. Deze maand kwam echter de aankondiging van Bitwig Studio 2, met een heleboel nieuwe features. Het programma zit inmiddels in de beta test-fase en men verwacht dat het op op 27 februari voor iedereen beschikbaar is. Inclusief een heleboel interessante vernieuwingen. In deze blog ga ik een paar van die nieuwe mogelijkheden behandelen.
Nieuwe apparaten
Om te beginnen voegt men een heleboel nieuwe “apparaten” toe. Devices noemt Bitwig ze: effecten die in de DAW te gebruiken zijn om geluid mee te bewerken. Het gaat hier in enkele gevallen trouwens om devices die in de meeste andere DAW’s al beschikbaar zijn, dus helemaal nieuw is het allemaal zeker niet.
Spectrum Analyzer bijvoorbeeld, is een grafische weergave van je geluid: om te zien waar de pieken zitten, en hoeveel er van elke frequentie aanwezig is in je muziek. Super nuttig natuurlijk en absoluut een gemis in de huidige versie van Bitwig.
Verder een Phaser en Pitch Shifter. Beide redelijk standaard effecten die ook al in veel andere software standaard meegeleverd wordt. Nu ook beschikbaar in Bitwig dus. Leuk nieuw speeltje is Treemonster, een zogenaamde ring modulator zoals je die ook ziet in veel hardware modulaire setups.
Naast audio effecten zijn er ook wat nieuwe midi effecten beschikbaar. Deze effecten beinvloeden niet het geluid, maar juist de midi informatie die naar een instrument wordt gestuurd. Multi Note bijvoorbeeld, geeft je de mogelijkheid om akkoorden te spelen met 1 enkele midi noot. Note Harmonizer zorgt er voor dat al je gespeelde noten binnen een gekozen toonsoort gespeeld worden.
Dan zijn er nog Note Length en Note Echo, ook apparaten die invloed hebben op de gespeelde noten. En als afsluiter Note Latch en Note Velocity. Ook allebei effecten die gespeelde midi noten beinvloeden. Eerlijk gezegd zijn dit allemaal redelijk standaard effecten die in iedere geval in Ableton Live al jaren aanwezig zijn. In dit geval zou ik het daarom niet echt vernieuwende toevoegingen willen noemen, maar meer een update die (te) lang op zich heeft laten wachten.
Uiteraard zijn we er daarmee nog niet. Bitwig heeft zich voorgenomen om een van de meest vernieuwende DAW’s op de markt te zetten, dus dat vraagt om wat meer innovatieve toevoegingen. Wat te denken van een hele lading aan devices om hardware aan te sturen? Hier wordt het interessant voor gebruikers van oude synthesizers of modulaire hardware. Zo is er een Midi CC device, om zogenaamde CC data naar hardware of plugins te sturen. Ook een fijne: Midi Program Change: biedt je de mogelijkheid om presets/patches van synthesizers te veranderen vanuit je software. Erg handig, zeker voor live doeleinden.
Voor de hardware gebruikers heeft men HW Clock Out, HW CV Instrument en HW CV Out. Allemaal apparaatjes die bedoeld zijn om te communiceren met hardware middels zogenaamde CV signalen. Gewoon via je audio interface. Erg nuttig en zeker een toevoeging die in veel andere DAW’s ontbreekt!
Naast al deze effecten beschikt Bitwig ook over enkele meegeleverde instrumenten, waaronder Polysynth. In de nieuwe versie is deze synthesizer sterk verbeterd.
Remote Control
Ook een interessante toevoeging: alle beschikbare Bitwig effecten en instrumenten bevatten nu een element om gewenste parameters aan toe te kennen. Erg makkelijk wanneer je een heleboel effecten tegelijk wilt aansturen met bijvoorbeeld een midi controller. Vergelijkbaar met de mogelijkheden van Ableton Live. Daarnaast is het gebruik van midi controllers toch al heel uitgebreid in Bitwig, aangezien alle “scripts” open source zijn. Iedereen kan er dus verbeteringen of aanpassingen in maken. Onder de streep betekent dat een breed aanbod aan mogelijkheden en interessante opties voor veel van de meest gangbare controllers die nu op de markt zijn. Zo is de APC 40 mk2, eigenlijk specifiek voor Ableton Live gemaakt, in Bitwig te gebruiken als een soort Push controller. Terwijl soortgelijke scripts voor Ableton Live een stuk minder uitgebreid zijn en sinds de laatste grote update in veel gevallen niet meer goed werken.
Fades & Crossfades
Niet alle toevoegingen zijn even innovatief, zoals ik al aangaf. De nieuwe mogelijkheid om fades en crossfades toe te passen in audio clips zijn in veel andere DAW’s al een standaard functie. Wat mij betreft dus een toevoeging die noodzakelijk was. Dat zelfde geldt voor de mogelijkheid om de hoogte van elk spoor op je scherm aan te passen. In versie 2 kan het.
Modulation
Maar dan is er nog dit handige snufje. En daarmee onderscheidt Bitig zich wel degelijk van een heleboel andere concurrenten. In Bitwig 2 hebben alle effecten en instrumenten zogenaamde “modulation slots” gekregen. Dat houdt in dat je een heleboel zaken een “beweging” mee kunt geven. Het zorgt dat geluid meer gaat leven, dat bepaalde parameters invloed hebben op andere parameters, en dat meerdere functies van elk effect of instrument beinvloed kunnen worden door een breed scala aan ingebouwde “modulators”. En allemaal vrij toe te passen naar wens. Het is te vergelijken met de mogelijkheden van moderne modulaire synthesizers, die de afgelopen jaren flink in populariteit zijn toegenomen. En flinke en interessante ontwikkeling dus!
Vernieuwingen
Interessante toevoegingen aan dit geheel zijn onder andere de mogelijkheid om VST3 te kunnen gebruiken. De nieuwste versie van het bekende VST protocol. VST’s zijn virtuele instrumenten en effecten die gemaakt zijn door andere fabrikanten, maar te gebruiken zijn in elke software die VST’s herkent. VST3 is de nieuwste variant, maar nog lang niet te gebruiken in de meeste DAW’s. Ook weer een flinke stap vooruit dus voor Bitwig. Andere noemenswaardige wijzigingen zijn een volledig vernieuwde menu functie, vernieuwde berichten functie en diverse “workflow” verbeteringen. Veel van de ingebouwde apparaten hebben nu bijvoorbeeld een zogenaamde dynamische weergave; je ziet dus direct wat er met het geluid gebeurt met behulp van “real-time” grafische weergave.
Prijs
Een van de vernieuwingen zit ook in de prijs. Dit is namelijk anders dan bij de meeste DAW software. In de meeste gevallen koop je software voor een vaste prijs en betaal je voor een grote update naar een nieuwe versie. Bitwig gaat het anders doen, in de vorm van een soort abonnement. Je betaalt 169,- Euro voor de nieuwe versie en krijgt dan alle updates en extraatjes in het komende jaar gratis. Dit geldt alleen voor bezitters van Bitwig 1. Stap je er voor het eerst in, dan betaal je straks 399,- Euro voor het hele pakket.
Aan het eind van het jaar kun je je licentie verlengen met een jaar. Dit is trouwens niet verplicht, dus je kunt ook gewoon wachten tot er een update komt die je aanspreekt en dan pas vernieuwen. Of dit in de praktijk aanslaat zal moeten blijken. Het heeft voor- en nadelen. Momenteel is er een aanbieding waarbij je de huidige versie (versie 1) kunt aanschaffen en dan de nieuwe versie (versie 2) gratis krijgt zodra deze op de markt komt.
Tot Slot
Zoals je ziet is er een heleboel nieuws toegevoegd. Of het allemaal even vernieuwend is mag je zelf bepalen. Persoonlijk zie ik veel toevoegingen waarvan ik vind dat ze er al veel eerder hadden moeten zijn. Vooral vanwege het feit dat veel van de grote concurrenten van Bitwig deze functies al lang en breed hebben. Bitwig lijkt bijna 2 jaar stil te hebben gestaan, dus deze update was op zijn minst noodzakelijk om mee te kunnen met de rest. Er zijn echter wel degelijk wat vernieuwende toevoegingen. De uitgebreide mogelijkheden voor het integreren van hardware bijvoorbeeld, zijn zeer interessant. VST3 compatibility ook, evenals de mogelijkheid om vrijwel alles te moduleren. Prijs is pittig te noemen, zeker als je alle upgrades en updates bij wilt houden: dat kost je dus minimaal 169,- euro per jaar, elk jaar, tenzij je de nieuwste versies niet nodig hebt. Helaas is het vaak noodzakelijk om dergelijke updates te doen, zodat alles ook werkt met de nieuwste besturingssystemen. De tijd zal moeten bewijzen of dit een levensvatbare manier is.
Hoe dan ook biedt Bitwig 2 een heleboel zeer interessante vernieuwingen en toevoegingen, waardoor het wellicht wat meer populariteit gaat krijgen. In ieder geval is Bitwig een steeds interessantere DAW die zich, zeker door de grote update, kan meten met de andere grote jongens in het wereldje. Op zoek naar een nieuwe DAW? Bitwig Studio 2
In 2014 Bitwig Studio was born. A DAW that has a lot of similarities to Ableton’s Live software. Not that surprising though, because several of the Bitwig developers are former Ableton employees that wanted to see a different approach. So they developed this software. Until now there have not been any major updates for Bitwig. But this month they announced Bitwig Studio 2, with a lot of new features. The software is in beta testing phase at the moment and should be available for the public after the 27th of february. It includes many new options and improvements. In this blog I will be listing some of the most interesting parts.
New devices
For starters there are many new effects available. Or “bevices” as Bitwig calls them: effects that can be used in the DAW for shaping sounds. In some cases though, these are effects that were already available in most other DAW’s, so they are not all that groundbreaking or interesting.
Spectrum Analyzer for example: a graphical display of frequencies to see where the peaks are and how much of every frequency is present in your music. A very useful device of course, that is not available in version 1 of Bitwig. Additionally new Phaser and Pitch Shifter devices. Both quite standard effects that is available in most other DAW’s. Now also available for Bitwig. Interesting new toy is a device called Treemonster, a so-called ring modulator comparable to effects you find in many modular hardware setups.
Besides new effects you also get some new midi effects. These effects don’t change the actual sound, but do their magic on the midi information that is sent to an instrument. Multi Note for example, changes a single note into a chord. Note Harmonizer makes sure all the played notes will be turned into the right notes for a chosen scale.
Then there’s Note Length and Note Echo. Devices that change the way midi notes are played. To be honest these are all quite standard effects that have been available in several DAW’s (like Ableton Live) for years. So I would not call these additions a big innovation. More like an update that was long overdue.
Of course there’s more. Bitwig has the goal to offer one of the most innovative DAW’s out there, so they also need some more groundbreaking upgrades. Part of this comes in the form of several devices that can be used to control old synths and modular hardware. There’s a Midi CC device, for sending CC data to hardware or plugins. Another great one: Midi Program Change, to skip through presets/patches on your hardware synthesizers via the software. Very useful, especially in live situations.
For the hardware users out there they’ve also included HW Clock Out, HW CV Instrument and HW CV Out. All of these are devices that can communicate with hardware through so-called CV signals. Using your own audio interface. Very cool and a feature that is not available in most other DAW’s!
Bitwig also features several software instruments like Polysynth. The new version of this synthesizer has been updated in version 2.
Remote Control
There’s more: all available Bitwig instruments and effects now have the option to map any parameter you want to a macro section. Very useful if you want to control several parameters using a midi controller. Comparable to the functions available in Ableton Live. The use of controllers is already very good in Bitwig, since all the remote “scripts” are open source. Anyone can make changes or improvements to them. This means you have a lot of interesting options when it comes to using many of the available midi controllers on today’s market. As an example, there’s the APC 40 mk2 controller that was made specifically for Ableton’s Live, but can be used in Bitwig as a sort of Push controller. At the same time Ableton Live offers less options when it comes to controllers and a lot of custom scripts that were available on the web don’t work like they used to after a major update.
Fades & Crossfades
Not all the new additions are very groundbreaking, like I mentioned before. The options to add fades and crossfades to audio clips are already available in most other DAWs. As far as I’m concerned this is a necessary addition. Same thing goes for the option to change the height of separate tracks on screen. version 2 can finally do this.
Modulation
But then there’s this. Something that really sets Bitwig apart from many other competitors. In Bitwig 2 all effects and instruments have “modulation slots”. This means you can add some “movement” to many parameters. This makes the sounds come to life, lets certain parameters control other parameters and gives you the ability to control several functions of effects and instruments using built-in “modulators”. You can change anything you like, comparable to modular synthesizers that have become popular again over the last years. A very interesting step!
New features
More interesting new features: VST3 compatibility. The latest version of the well known VST protocol. VSTs are virtual instruments and effects made by other manufacturers, that can be used in VST compatible software. But VST3 is not yet usable in many DAW’s. Again a big step forward for Bitwig. Other new changes include a completely new menu, a message system and some workflow enhancements. Several devices now offer dynamic displays; displaying what’s going on with your sound in real time.
Pricing
Another new feature is the way you pay for Bitwig. Different from most DAWs anyway. In most cases you will buy a software package. When there’s a big new update available, you pay for that too. Bitwig wants to do things differently, in the form of a subscription. If you already own version 1 you pay 169,- Euros for an upgrade to version 2, including all the updates and additions that will become available during the next year. New users will pay 399,- Euros for the full package.
At the end of the year you can renew the subscription for another year. This is not mandatory though, so you could also wait until there’s a new upgrade you want and then renew the license. Hard to say if this actually works well in real life. It has some advantages, but also some negative sides. At the moment there’s a good deal new users too. Buy version 1 now and get version 2 for free when it hits the market.
Finally
As you can see, there’s a lot of new stuff coming. Are all new features groundbreaking or unique? In the end you will have to judge that for yourself. Personally I see many additions that should have been implemented a long time ago. Especially when you compare these options to the ones that are already available in the software of Bitwig’s competitors. It feels like Bitwig has been standing still for almost 2 years, after a promising start, so some of these new features were very necessary.
But there are also some very cool innovations, like hardware integration, VST3 compatibility or the modulation possibilities. The price is pretty high, especially if you want to keep things up-to-date every year. It will set you back at least 169,- Euros every year, unless you skip a few versions. Unfortunately you usually have to keep things up-to-date though, just to make sure it keeps working with your computer’s operating system. Time will have to tell if this is actually a viable method.
Nevertheless Bitwig 2 offers a lot of nice additions and innovations that will probably make it a bit more popular in today’s market. This big upgrade gives it more chances to compete with the other big boys in the world of music production. So if you are looking for a new DAW, why not give this one a try?
