Soundswitch verbindt licht en geluid

Soundswitch
Dit is interessant voor de software dj’s onder ons. Een redelijk eenvoudige manier om geluid en licht op elkaar af te stemmen. Het heet Soundswitch. Hieronder meer. Misschien heb je het zelf al eens gemerkt tijdens het dj-en. Een afgestemde lichtshow kan een enorm mooie aanvulling zijn bij een dj-set. Zelf heb ik het vaak meegemaakt. Wanneer de juiste persoon achter de knoppen van de lichtinstallatie zat was de sfeer altijd meteen een stuk beter. Licht en geluid vormden een mooie combinatie, omdat de licht technicus direct inspeelde op de muziek die door de dj gedraaid werd. En op de dansvloer reageren mensen daar vaak erg positief op! Dat zelfde geldt overigens voor een vj. Als beelden en muziek een eenheid lijken te vormen komt dat de sfeer op een dansfeestje vrijwel altijd ten goede.
Dmx
De makers van Soundswitch begrijpen dat ook, en spelen hier handig op in. Soundswitch maakt het namelijk mogelijk voor dj’s om een lichtshow af te stemmen op hun muziek. De lichten kunnen aangestuurd worden door middel van het zogenaamde DMX systeem. DMX is een soort communicatie signaal voor lichtsystemen. De verschillende lichten in bijvoorbeeld een club kunnen allemaal worden aangestuurd via deze zelfde “taal”. Waardoor de licht technicus dus controle heeft over alle “discolichten” die op het besturingssysteem zijn aangesloten. Vergelijkbaar met zoiets als MIDI in de muziek.
Sync
Soundswitch biedt een combinatie van software en een speciaal kastje om te communiceren met de buitenwereld. De software biedt veel mogelijkheden voor de dj om alles naadloos aan te laten sluiten op de dj set. De lichten kunnen in sync met de gespeelde muziek worden gebruikt. Het is enigszins vergelijkbaar met moderne dj- of produktiesoftware. Alles is af te stemmen naar wens, voor alle afzonderlijke verlichting in een club of theater. Wanneer de dj zijn/haar set speelt stuurt de Soundswitch software tegelijkertijd de hele lichtshow in die zaal aan. De dj kan zich daardoor volledig richten op de muziek, terwijl het licht aangepast wordt. Ook wanneer er geen lichttechnicus aanwezig is.
Geen nieuw concept
Nou is dit concept natuurlijk niet helemaal nieuw. Er zijn meerdere mogelijkheden om zoiets voor elkaar te krijgen. Freestyler Dmx is een alternatief (Windows only). Met Max/MSP, van dezelfde makers als Max For Live, kan zoiets ook. Met behulp van DMaX bijvoorbeeld. Er zijn voldoende voorbeelden te vinden. Probleem is vaak dat dergelijke software los van de dj software werkt, en meestal aparte controllers nodig heeft. Verder heb je een aansluiting nodig die met de eerder genoemde DMX systemen gekoppeld kan worden. Om nog maar te zwijgen over de hoeveelheid programmeerwerk die er vaak bij komt kijken. Niet voor iedereen weggelegd natuurlijk.
Makkelijk
En precies daar speelt Soundswitch dus op in. De software is toegankelijker dan de meeste alternatieve programma’s, maar daarnaast ook volledig af te stemmen op je gebruikte dj software. Zeker voor de dj’s onder ons die ook wat ervaring met DAW’s hebben zal het een stuk herkenbaarder zijn. Verder biedt Soundswitch een bijbehorend apparaatje aan waarmee de lichtshow direct aan het lichtsysteem ter plaatste gekoppeld kan worden. Een alles in 1 oplossing dus. En ook een oplossing die gebruikt kan worden door mensen met wat minder uitgebreide programmeerkennis.
Op de website van Soundswitch is genoeg info te vinden. Aangevuld met tutorial video’s, een probeer versie van de software en de mogelijkheid om het pakket aan te schaffen. Let wel, dit is verre van goedkoop. De hele set (software + speciaal kastje) kost namelijk bijna 500 dollar. Maar het is een mooie oplossing voor dj’s die graag een afgestemde lichtshow willen maken. Aansluiten kan direct via het meegeleverde kastje.
Kortom: niet voor iedereen weggelegd, maar zeker interessant voor de dj’s die graag een totaalervaring op gebied van licht en geluid willen geven. Neem eens een kijkje, zou ik zeggen, misschien is het interessant voor je!

Soundswitch
This is an interesting item for the software dj’s among us. A fairly easy way to make sound and lights work together. It is called Soundswitch. More about that in this blog. You may have noticed during a dj set. A light show that interacts with the music can be a huge benefit during a dj performance. I’ve seen it happen a lot myself. When the right person was controlling the lights in a club, it immediately created a much better atmosphere on the dance floor. Lights and music formed a nice combination, because the lighting engineer reacted to the music that was being played. And people on the dance floor usually respond very well tot hat! Same thing goes for a vj. When visuals and music interact, the vibe on the dance floor usually also benefits from this.
Dmx
The makers of Soundswitch understand this and use it to their advantage. Soundswitch offers dj’s the possibility to make the light show work well with the music that he/she plays. Lights can be controlled using the DMX protocol. DMX is a way of communicating with the light system in a club. It is a “language” that most lighting systems understand and makes it possible for a lighting engineer to control all the “disco lights” that are connected to the same system. Comparable to something like the MIDI protocol in music.
Sync
Soundswitch offers a combination of software and hardware, adding a little “box” to communicate with the outside world. The software lets the dj design and control the light show to work well with the music that is played. The software is comparable to a lot of modern dj- or production software. Everything can be adjusted to taste, for all the separate lights in a club or theater. While the dj plays a set, Soundswitch controls all the lights in the venue. The dj can focus on playing music, while the lights add to the good vibe. Even when there is no “light jockey” available.
Not a new concept
Of course this concept isn’t something completely new. There are several ways to do something similar. Freestyler Dmx for example (Windows only). With Max/MSP, from the same company as Max For Live, you can do the same thing too. By using this device called DMaX for example. And there are more similar examples out there. But in many cases the software is completely separate from the dj software, or requires an extra controller. And you still need a way to connect the signal to the DMX system. Not to mention the amount of work is needed to program the whole show or even get to know the software. That level of programming is not for everyone, of course.
Easy
And that is where Soundswitch comes in. The software is easier to use than most alternatives, but can also be completely synced to the dj software. Especially when you have some experience with DAW’s for audio production, you will quickly recognize the workflow. Besides that, Soundswitch also offers some hardware that makes it easy to connect the software to the local DMX system. An all-in-one solution. That can also be used by people that don’t know a lot about programming.
You can find a lot of info on the Soundswitch website. Including several tutorial videos, a trial version of the software and the option to buy the system online. Mind you, it is not exactly cheap. The whole package (software + special hardware) will set you back almost 500 dollars. But it is definitely an interesting solution for dj’s that want to add a light show to their performance. Connecting to any DMX system is easy with the Soundswitch hardware.
This might not be the best option for every dj out there, but is certainly interesting for those who want to get easier access to an allround experience that syncs lights and music.
