Een goede basis
Ok, je hebt je in de wereld van de muziekproductie gestort. Geweldig! Maar hoe kun je ervoor zorgen dat je ook nuttig resultaat behaalt? Dat is een probleem waar veel beginnende producers tegenaan lopen.
In dit artikel ga ik je niet vertellen wat de snelste weg naar de top is. Ook ga ik je niet vertellen wat je wel en niet “mag” doen. En al helemaal niet welke muziek je moet gaan maken! Niet iedereen leert even snel, niet iedereen heeft dezelfde aanleg en over smaak is al helemaal niet veel nuttigs te zeggen.
Wat ik wel ga doen, is een paar onderwerpen aankaarten die je een heel eind in de goede richting kunnen helpen, los van skills, smaak of kennis. Er zijn namelijk een paar zaken die het niveau van je producties op kunnen krikken; goed gereedschap zorgt voor beter resultaat. Hopelijk kan ik je alvast een eind op weg helpen.
Het juiste gereedschap
Daar is ie weer; gereedschap. Je hebt de eerste stap gezet, een geschikte DAW gekozen en wat geoefend. Tot zo ver prima. Maar wat kan er beter? Op dit moment ga ik er even vanuit dat je al een fatsoenlijke computer hebt die voldoet aan de minimumeisen van de software die je wilt gebruiken. Info daarover is meestal op de site van verschillende fabrikanten te vinden. Hoe verder je boven die minimumeisen zit, hoe beter. Muziekproductie vraagt veel van je computer, dus goede specs zijn handig
De zwakste schakel
Je gereedschap is zo sterk als de zwakste schakel. En los van een sterke computer is er 1 onderwerp dat vaak ter sprake komt wanneer het gaat om muziekproductie: en dat is de zogenaamde geluidskaart. (ook wel audio interface genoemd) Ja, vrijwel alle computers hebben al een ingebouwde geluidskaart. Maar heb je daar ook echt wat aan? Het antwoord is meestal: nee! Prima voor de huis-,tuin- en keukentoepassingen, maar niet voor een goed resultaat wanneer het om het maken van muziek gaat. Een audio interface heeft vele voordelen: betere geluidskwaliteit, extra in- en outputs, aansluitmogelijkheden voor speakers, koptelefoon, etc.
Schaf daarom een redelijke (externe) geluidskaart aan.
Less is more
Ik weet het: er is zoveel leuks te vinden; geweldige apparatuur, duizenden plugins en synths. Maar het beste resultaat krijg je toch echt wanneer je je beperkt tot een paar “go-to” apparaten. Of dat nou software of hardware is. Hoe beter je weet hoe die dingen werken, hoe beter het resultaat. Je kunt dus beter een paar apparaten van-haver-tot-gort kennen dan honderden opties aanschaffen die je eigenlijk allemaal maar gedeeltelijk snapt.
Monitor Speakers
“Waarom zou ik van die actieve monitors kopen, ik heb toch al een paar hifi speakers en een koptelefoon?” Die opmerking hoor ik vaak. De vraag is begrijpelijk. Het antwoord is redelijk simpel. Om goed resultaat te halen op gebied van geluid moet je in de eerste plaats daadwerkelijk goed kunnen horen wat er wel of niet goed klinkt.
Actieve speakers (of monitor speakers) zijn speakers met ingebouwde versterkers. Dat in tegenstelling tot “gewone” speakers, die een extra versterker nodig hebben. Monitor speakers geven het geluid zo “vlak” mogelijk weer, terwijl gewone speakers en een versterker het geluid juist zo warm en vol mogelijk weergeven. In geval van muziekproductie is het dus wenselijk om problemen ook zo goed mogelijk te horen.
Koptelefoon
Naast gebruik van speakers kun je uiteraard ook een koptelefoon gebruiken. Maar ook hier zijn een paar zaken belangrijk die veel beginners over het hoofd zien. Ten eerste geldt voor koptelefoons ongeveer het zelfde als voor speakers. Een “gewone” koptelefoon is niet bedoeld om muziek te analyseren. Een andere veel gemaakte fout is het gebruik van dj koptelefoons voor muziekproductie. Bedenk goed dat een dj koptelefoon is bedoeld om (dans)muziek hard en met veel bas weer te geven. Niet om details en problemen weer te geven. Koptelefoons in het algemeen hebben een ander nadeel, en dat is een volledig vertekend beeld van stereo informatie. Dat geldt dus ook voor speciale productie koptelefoons.
De beste aanpak is daarom in veel gevallen een combinatie tussen koptelefoon en speakers: beide hebben hun voor- en nadelen, maar door te combineren voorkom je veel problemen.
Samengevat
Om een zo goed mogelijke start te maken in de wereld van muziekproductie zijn er dus een paar zaken die meteen al verschil maken. Een geschikte audio interface, een paar actieve monitor speakers en/of een speciale koptelefoon. Deze zaken zijn niet heilig, en al helemaal niet verplicht. Maar het helpt zeer zeker! Mijn tip voor een beter resultaat is dan ook: vergeet even al die leuke controllers, die geweldige plugins, die fantastische drumcomputers en die duizenden gigs aan gratis samples die voor je studio te krijgen zijn.
Begin bij de basis. En de basis is je gereedschap: een redelijke computer, een audio interface en een manier om goed te horen wat je aan het doen bent.
Een goed begin is het halve werk. En op deze manier ben je al een eind op de goede weg!

A solid base
OK, so you have decided to dive into the world of music production. Great! But how can you make sure you start getting a reasonable result? That is a problem that many beginners face. I’m not going to tell you what the quickest way to the top is. I’m also not going to tell you what you “can or can’t” do. Let alone tell you what type of music you should make. Not everyone learns at the same speed and I don’t even want to get into matters of personal taste.
What I will do, however, is name a few subjects that can help you get a better start immediately. And they have nothing to do with skills, taste or knowledge.
Because there are a few basic things that can improve your productions: good tools give you a better result. Hopefully I can give you a push in the right direction.
The right tools
There’s that word again: tools. You’ve just taken your first steps, chose a DAW and practiced a bit. So far, so good. But what can be improved? At this stage I’m assuming you have a reasonable computer that meets the minimum demands of your DAW of choice. More info is usually available on the manufacturer’s website. The higher your specs are, the better. Music production is going to take a lot of processing power, so good specs are very useful.
The weakest link
Your combination of tools is only as strong as the weakest link. And besides a powerful computer there is one subject that comes up a lot when audio processing is concerned: the so called sound card (also called audio interface). Yes, almost every computer has a built in sound card. But is that really useful? In most cases the answer is; no! Fine for simple tasks, but not for making music. An (external) audio interface has many advantages: better audio quality, more in- and outputs, connections for speakers, headphones, etc.
Long story short: get a reasonable (external) audio interface.
Less is more
I know: there are so many cool gadgets out there; fantastic equipment, thousands of plugins and synths. But usually your skills and sound will really improve much more when you limit yourself to a few “go-to” devices. Software or hardware. The better you understand the tools you are working with, the better the results will be. So it is better to know a few devices like the back of your hand instead of having hundreds of devices that you only understand partially.
Monitoring Speakers
“Why should I buy those active speakers if I already have some great hi-fi speakers and headphones?” Not the first time I’ve heard that question. And it’s a reasonable one. The answer is quite simple. To be able to get good results in sound, you first need to be able to actually hear what does or does not sound good. Active speakers (or monitoring speakers) are speakers with built-in amplifiers. Normal speakers need a separate amplifier. Monitoring speakers try to make your music sound as “flat” as possible, while regular speakers try to give that sound some more warmth and fullness.
When making music, however, you want the speakers to sound as “honest” as possible, tob e able to hear problem areas.
Headphones
Besides speakers you can also use headphones. But there are a few important things to understand. And many beginners don’t know this. First of all there is this: a “normal” set of headphones was not designed to fully analyze music.
Another mistake is using DJ headphones for music production. These were made to play (dance)music at high levels with enough bass. Not for listening to mistakes or fine details in your own music. Headphones also have the disadvantage that they will give you a wrong idea of the actual stereo information. Mind you, that also goes for professional studio headphones. Your best way to go is usually a combination of both active speakers and specialized studio headphones.
Both have their pros and cons, but the combination of both will save you a lot of problems.
In conclusion
To get the best start possible in the world of electronic music production there are a few basic things that can immediately make a big difference. A decent audio interface, some active monitoring speakers and/or a specialized pair of studio headphones. These things are not an absolute must. But they will really help a lot! So the best tip for instant better results is this: forget about all those great controllers, those fantastic plugins, beautiful drum computers or thousands of free samples that are available for making music.
Start with the basics. And your basics, in this case, are your tools: a good computer, a reasonable audio interface and a good way to actually hear what’s going on.
This way, you at least start in the best way possible!
