Ableton Link

Ableton Link
Voordat er zoiets als USB verbindingen bestond, en muziek maken met de computer nog in haar kinderschoenen stond, was het lastig om verschillende apparaten met elkaar te laten communiceren. Spelen op het zelfde tempo als de rest, zoals een band dat doet, is voor muzikanten een vanzelfsprekend iets. Maar bij gebruik van synthesizers, samplers en drumcomputers was dat een ander verhaal. Die hadden vroeger geen USB kabel, en veel apparaten hadden zelfs geen toetsenbord/klavier. Tegenwoordig zijn daar legio oplossingen voor; USB verbindingen, synthesizers met software mogelijkheden, en zelfs een heleboel volledige software instrumenten. Daardoor werken veel apparaten een stuk makkelijker samen. Door de komst van Ableton Link is er echter een flinke nieuwe stap gezet op dat gebied. In deze blog zal ik er wat verder op ingaan.
MIDI
Met of zonder computer, het is mogelijk om verschillende synthesizers, drumcomputers en samplers met elkaar te laten communiceren. Dit is nuttig om bijvoorbeeld het tempo gelijk te krijgen. Daarvoor heeft men ooit MIDI bedacht. Dat staat voor “Musical Instrument Digital Interface”. Het is een communicatie protocol voor muziekapparaten; een soort taal die de meeste muziekapparaten begrijpen. Via Midi kabels kunnen uiteenlopende instrumenten met elkaar samenwerken, zoals de leden van een band dat bijvoorbeeld ook doen. Spelen op het zelfde tempo, beginnen op de eerste tel van de maat, de juiste noten spelen, etcetera. MIDI bestaat sinds begin jaren tachtig en is nog steeds te vinden op veel muziekapparatuur. Om instrumenten te koppelen is dus een midi aansluiting nodig en gebruik van midi kabels. Tegenwoordig ook vaak via USB te gebruiken. Maar verder een redelijk verouderd systeem met de nodige problemen.
Draadloos
Tegenwoordig kan er een heleboel draadloos. Een afdruk naar je printer versturen, bestanden overdragen, en noem het maar op. En daar speelt Ableton’s Link systeem op in. Het is een protocol dat vergelijkbaar is met het midi idee, maar dan draadloos. Door het Link systeem is het mogelijk om met meerdere muziekmakers als een soort band samen te spelen. Meerdere laptops met Ableton Live bijvoorbeeld, of een ipad met software instrumenten. Allemaal gesynchroniseerd via een draadloos netwerk. Geen lastige kabels meer, geen urenlang geknutsel, maar meteen aan de slag. Ideaal voor spontane jamsessies bijvoorbeeld.
Apps
In eerste instantie was dit systeem bedoeld om meerdere laptops met daarop Ableton Live aan elkaar te kunnen koppelen, of om bijvoorbeeld een ipad met daarop een muziek app draadloos te synchroniseren met Live. Onlangs heeft Ableton de mogelijkheden echter uitgebreid. Er komt steeds meer software op de markt die met Link kan werken. Naast een heleboel IOS apps (bekijk de hele lijst hier) werkt het sinds kort ook met Reason (DAW) en Serato DJ (DJ software). Ook kan het nu diverse apparaten laten samenwerken zonder gebruik van Ableton Live! In tegenstelling tot midi is het ook nog eens mogelijk om heel makkelijk aan te haken bij een jamsessie van anderen, of om de verbinding vroegtijdig te verbreken, zonder dat de rest daar gevolgen van ondervindt.
Ontwikkeling
Het Link systeem wordt steeds verder ontwikkeld. Meer mogelijkheden, uitgebreidere keuzes. Het lijkt veel producers te zijn ontgaan, maar de vernieuwing die dit systeem met zich meebrengt kan van enorme waarde zijn. Ruim 30 jaar na de uitvinding van het midi protocol is er eindelijk een draadloos systeem voor moderne muziekinstrumenten! Er is zelfs een gratis Link-naar-midi app te downloaden , om beide systemen samen te laten werken. Geen meterslange midi kabels meer nodig en altijd in sync! En er zijn steeds meer ontwikkelaars die dit systeem in hun software verwerken.

Veel technische info, maar misschien heb je niet echt een beeld bij wat ik hier vertel. Daarom kan ik je aanraden om het gewoon eens te bekijken of zelf uit te proberen. Bekijk de video bij deze blog even om te zien hoe het werkt, of neem een kijkje op de Link pagina van Ableton. Zelf heb ik het grondig uitgeprobeerd, en hoewel ik wat sceptisch was kan ik er niet omheen: het werkt! Simpel en snel. Zonder ingewikkelde aanpassingen. Gewoon aanhaken via een draadloos netwerk. Probeer het zelf eens, het is de moeite waard. En een enorme technische sprong die hopelijk in de toekomst door nog veel meer ontwikkelaars wordt opgepikt!

Ableton Link
Before there were USB connections, when making music on computer was still very new, it was quite hard to make different electronic instruments communicate with eachother. Playing in time with others, like a band, is a very normal thing for musicians. But it doesn’t work that way when using synthesizers, samplers or drumcomputers. They didn’t have USB cables in those days. And some of them didn’t even have a keyboard. Nowadays there are more options; USB connections, synthesizers with software interfaces and of course even full software instruments. This makes it easier to have different machines work together. The introduction of Ableton Link offers even more possibilities. I’ll explain in this blog.
MIDI
With or without a computer, it is possible to make different synthesizers, drumcomputers and samplers communicate with eachother. This is quite useful for synchronising the overall tempo, for instance. That is what MIDI was invented for. It stands for “Musical Instrument Digital Interface” and is a communication protocol for musical instruments; a language that many machines understand. By connecting midi cables, many different machines can work together, like members of a band would. Play at the same tempo, start at the first note of a bar or play the correct notes. Midi has been around since the early eighties and is still available on many musical instruments. You need a midi interface and midi cables for that. Midi is also available via USB connection nowadays, but the whole system is a bit old. And there are many problems that come with this system.
Wireless
These days, many things are possible through a wireless network. Send some prints to your printer, transmit files, etcetera. Ableton’s Link system uses these same possibilities. The protocol is comparable to the midi system, but wireless. Link makes it possible to make several devices play together like a band. Several laptop computers running Ableton Live, or ipads running software instruments. All synchronised through a wireless network. No cables, no hours of frustration; you can dive right into it. Ideal for spontaneous jamsessions, to give an example.
Apps
Initially the system was designed to be able to connect several wireless devices running Ableton Live or Link-compatible software. But Ableton recently added extra options. More and more software is now compatible with this system. Besides many IOS software instruments (see the whole list here) it now also works with Reason (DAW) and Serato DJ (DJ software). Device scan also work together without the need of running Live! It is also possible to jump into -or leave – a jamsession without affecting any of the other musicians; this is something that was not that simple when using midi.
Development
The whole Link system is developing more and more. Many additional options and possibilities. Many producers seem to have missed the impact that this system can have on modern music making. The implications could be huge. More than 30 years after the birth of the midi protocol, there is finally a similar wireless system for modern instruments! There is even a free app available that offers the possibility to translate Link to midi. And the amount of developers that integrate Link into their devices keeps growing.

This is a lot of technical info, I know. And maybe it is hard to imagine all the things I’m talking about here. That’s why I really recommend taking a look at it yourself. Watch the video with this blog to see ho wit works, or have a look at Ableton’s Link page. I tried it for myself too. And even though I was a bit sceptic at first, I can’t deny it: it works! Simple and fast. No extra effort needed. Just join Link through a wifi network. Try it yourself, it’s worth it. An dit is a huge leap forward that will hopefully be implemented by many more developers in the future!
