Traktor legt de lat weer wat hoger

Onlangs werd door Native Instruments een nieuwe versie van DJ software Traktor (Pro) uitgebracht. Nou zijn niet alle updates even interessant natuurlijk, maar in dit geval betreft het een paar vernieuwende extra’s. Wat te denken van een step sequencer in je remix decks en een Ableton Link integratie? Voor wie geen idee heeft wat dit inhoudt zal ik een toelichting geven.
In een eerdere blog heb ik het al gehad over Link. Veel gebruikers zullen zich niet helemaal realiseren hoe ontzettend geweldig deze mogelijkheid is. Maar neem het aan van iemand die in z’n leven al heel wat ellende met syncen van software en hardware heeft meegemaakt; dit is een revolutionaire ontwikkeling! MIDI, de computertaal die al decennia lang gebruikt wordt om diverse apparatuur met elkaar te laten communiceren, is eigenlijk in al die tijd nauwelijks veranderd. Goed, de mogelijkheid om MIDI via usb te gebruiken is erbij gekomen. Maar daar is ook wel alles mee gezegd. Overal waren kabels voor nodig, niet alle apparaten waren even makkelijk te koppelen, en het MIDI protocol kon af en toe met een enorme “latency” te maken hebben. Dat laatste houdt in, dat het tijd kost om het signaal van het ene naar het andere instrument te sturen. En dat verschilt per apparaat. Vooral bij live optredens een probleem. Wanneer je iets inspeelt en het duur even voordat je het resultaat daadwerkelijk hoort, is dat erg lastig.
Maar nu is er dus Link; zowel via kabels als draadloos te gebruiken, en wat mij betreft een zeer geschikte vervanger voor het bijna antieke MIDI protocol. En veel belangrijker; het werkt! Ableton Live heeft het protocol ook nog eens “open source” gemaakt. Dat houdt in dat andere ontwikkelaars er mee aan de slag kunnen en het dus ook in hun eigen software kunnen toepassen. Dat het een goed systeem was bleek wel uit het feit dat een heleboel grote spelers in het muziekwereldje het aan hun producten toevoegden. Korg implementeerde het in een heleboel IOS apps, Serato DJ software is nu Link compatible, en Native Instruments paste het toe in de app versie van Maschine: iMaschine. Dan kun je er eigenlijk wel van uit gaan dat er nog veel meer bedrijven en ontwikkelaars gaan volgen. Traktor was dus een logisch gevolg. Wat het inhoudt is, dat Traktor vanaf nu draadloos of intern te koppelen is aan andere software, waaronder Ableton Live. Het is nu dus mogelijk om een goed werkende combinatie te gebruiken van DJ software en bijvoorbeeld een DAW (Digital Audio Workstation); zonder ellende van kabels of diverse hulpmiddelen. Een overzicht van software met Link opties vind je hier. En het aantal groeit wekelijks!
Maar daarmee zijn we er nog niet: Traktor introduceert nu ook de mogelijkheid tot zogenaamd step sequencen in haar Remix Decks. Remix decks, dat is eigenlijk een mogelijkheid om loops af te spelen binnen de Traktor software. En niet 1, maar 4 afzonderlijke loops tegelijk in het zelfde “deck”. Niet te verwarren met “stems”, ook een nieuwe functie sinds de vorige update. In diezelfde Remix Decks bestaat nu dus de mogelijkheid om zelf patronen in te spelen, zoals je dat met een drumcomputer of sampler kunt doen. Om beginners een idee te geven wat dit inhoudt, raad ik aan om de toegevoegde Traktor video’s te bekijken.
Wat het allemaal nog leuker maakt is, dat Native Instruments er ook voor heeft gezorgd dat de oudere Traktor controllers met deze functies kunnen werken. Niet alleen de nieuwste D2 controllers of de alles-in-1 S5. Ook populaire controllers zoals de F1 werken er nu mee. Vanwege de gekleurde drumpads is dat een ideale manier om snel patronen te kunnen programmeren. Ook nog eens met visuele weergave, waardoor je minder naar je scherm zit te staren.
Voor iedereen die de Traktor software al in zijn/haar bezit heeft is het helemaal goed nieuws: de nieuwste update (2.11) die al deze functies mogelijk maakt is gratis voor geregistreerde gebruikers! Door deze mogelijkheden wordt de grens tussen DJ en live performance weer een beetje vager. Je kunt muziek mixen, afzonderlijke stems van tracks combineren, loops toevoegen met Remix Decks en nu dus ook je eigen drum- en ritme loops programmeren! Voeg daar de koppeling van Link aan toe en de mogelijkheden zijn bijna oneindig. Of het aanslaat en door veel DJ’s gebruikt gaat worden moet nog blijken natuurlijk. Maar dat het kan is al geweldig!
Probeer het eens uit, zou ik zeggen, en gebruik het op je eigen manier. Het kan je DJ set een stuk interessanter maken! Wil je de fijne kneepjes leren, dan kun je uiteraard ook contact opnemen met DJ School Utrecht voor wat 1-op-1 lessen.
Traktor raises the bar again

Recently Native Instruments released a new version of their popular Traktor (Pro) DJ software. Not every update is that interesting, but this one adds a lot of new extras. What about a step sequencer, built into the Remix Decks? And Ableton Link integration? For those of you that don’t knwo what I’m talking about, I’ll try to give some extra info.
In a previous blog I talked about Link already. Many users will probably not immediately realize how fantastic this option is. But take it from someone that has run into a lot of issues with syncing hardware and software in his life: this is a revolutionary development! MIDI, the computer language that has been around for decades to make a variety of equipment communicate with eachother, has barely changed in all those years. Sure, the option to use MIDI over usb was added. But that is about all that has changed. You needed cables for everything, not all devices were perfectly compatible and the MIDI protocol could sometimes induce a lot of “latency”. That last problem means that it takes time for a signal to travel from one instrument or program to the next. It is different for every device. Causing a big problem for live performance. When you play something and it takes some time before you actually hear it, this can be very annoying.
But now there’s Link; via cables or wireless and a very viable replacement for the nearly antique MIDI protocol. Even more important: it actually works! Ableton Live made the protocol “open source” so other developers can modify it and implement it in their own software. That this Link protocol was good was proven by the fact that several big players in the music business added it to their products. Korg added it to a lot of IOS apps, Serato DJ software is now Link compatible, and Native Instruments already added it to their app version of Maschine: iMaschine. So it is fair to assume that many others will probably follow. Adding it to Traktor was to be expected. What this means is, that Traktor can now be linked to other software like Ableton Live: internally or through wireless network. So you can now combine DJ software with a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) without messy cables or additional tools. You can find a list of Link compatible apps here. And the number keeps growing on a weekly basis!
And that is not all: Traktor also introduces the possibility of step sequencing to its Remix Decks. Remix Decks allow you to play loops in your DJ set. Not 1, but 4 simultaneous loops inside the same “deck”. Not to be confused with “stems”, another new function that was added earlier. Those same Remix Decks now give you the opportunity to program your own patterns, like you would with a sampler or drum machine. To give beginners an idea what all of this means: watch some of the added Traktor videos.
For even more fun, Native Instruments made sure older Traktor controllers also work with these new features. Not just the latest ones like the D2 or all-in-one controller S5. Popular older controllers like the F1 are also compatible. The coloured drumpads are ideal for programming patterns quickly. With visual feedback, so you don’t have to stare at the screen all the time.
And there’s good news for Traktor software owners: the latest update (2.11) that makes all these things possible is free for registered users! These options turn the boundaries between DJ-ing and live performance into a grey area even more. You can simply mix traxcks, add and combine separate parts of tracks with the stems function, add loops with the Remix Decks and also program your own patterns! Add Link compatibility to that and the options become almost infinite. We will have to wait and see if many DJ’s will actually use this built-in function, of course. But just the fact that it is even possible is great!
