Roland pakt uit op 909 dag
Zoals de meesten van jullie waarschijnlijk wel hebben gemerkt heeft Roland zojuist een hele reeks aan nieuwe apparaten uitgebracht. Aanleiding hiervan was 909-dag. 9 september jl. Een overzicht vind je op deze Roland 909 day pagina.
909 drumcomputer
909 verwijst naar het type nummer van een van de meest beroemde apparaten in de geschiedenis van elektronische dansmuziek; de TR-909. Dit is een drumcomputer die al enkele decennia niet meer gemaakt wordt en eigenlijk alleen nog tweedehands verkrijgbaar is, als je geluk hebt. En niet voor een zacht prijsje, dat moge duidelijk zijn. Dat zelfde geldt trouwens voor enkele andere apparaten uit diezelfde reeks; de TB-303 (acid) en de TR-808. Enige tijd geleden heeft Roland een paar van deze apparaten nieuw leven ingeblazen. De Aira reeks. Daar hoorde o.a. een TR-8 drumcomputer bij; eigenlijk een digitale hybride tussen een 808 en een 909 drumcomputer. En de TB-3, een digitale versie van de TB-303.
Hoewel het digitale versies betrof (en geen analoge) waren veel producers redelijk enthousiast. De apparaten bleken best goed te presteren. Groot nadeel was de “kermis-uitstraling” van deze apparaten; veel gekleurde lampjes en overal die groene accenten die de Aira reeks kenmerkte. Dat valt niet bij iedereen in goede aarde. Het geeft de apparaten een beetje een “speelgoed” look. Maar nu is er dus een geheel nieuwe reeks. O.a. een DJ-808 mixer/controller met ingebouwde step-sequencer. Verder o.a. de System-8 synthesizer, de V-1SD video switcher/controller, TT-99 draaitafel (in 909 look) en DJ-99 (2-kanaals DJ mixer in 909 look) en een 2-tal synthesizers (TR-09/TB-03) en een vocoder (VP-03). Grotendeels verwijzingen naar eerdere apparaten van Roland, inclusief de uitstraling.
In deze blog ga ik er even een paar uitpikken, om je een idee te geven wat er te krijgen is.
DJ-808
dj-808 mixer/controller
Een dj-mixer en controller. Ontworpen om naadloos samen te werken met Serato DJ software. Daarnaast voorzien van een ingebouwde drumcomputer en step-sequencer, 4 kanalen , trigger pads en een ingebouwde voice transformer. Op zich een leuk idee, omdat het DJ-en combineert met de mogelijkheid om aanvullende drums/samples te gebruiken. Een soort draagbare alles-in-1 oplossing. Meest gehoorde commentaar uit DJ- en producerland is echter dat er wel erg veel functies in 1 apparaat zitten, wat ten koste gaat van de overzichtelijkheid. De duidelijke verwijzing naar de Aira reeks (met die kermis-uitstraling) valt ook niet bij iedereen in goede aarde. Nog los van de vraag wat precies de doelgroep is. De tijd zal het leren. System-8
System-8 synthesizer
8-stemmige synthesizer met 3 oscillators, filters, effecten en veelzijdige LFO’s, veel knoppen en ingebouwde arpeggiator, CV/gate outputs, vocoder en polyfone step sequencer. Daarnaast de mogelijkheid om via Rolands “plug-out” systeem de sounds van diverse Roland klassiekers na te bootsen. Bij aankoop krijg je de Jupiter-8 en Juno-106 synthesizer sounds er al bij. Makkelijk te koppelen aan andere gear en voorzien van veel nieuwe snufjes. Dit apparaat is echter behoorlijk prijzig. De al in een eerdere blog genoemde Deepmind synthesizer van Behringer bijvoorbeeld, is goedkoper en een goed alternatief. Op papier een interessant apparaat; in de praktijk zal het zich nog moeten bewijzen. Meer info vind je op de System-8 productpagina.
TR-09 en TB-03
TB-03 & TR-09 gear
Roland bracht in afgelopen jaren al enkele soortgelijke apparaten uit; de zogenaamde Boutique reeks. Een serie kleine en handzame synthesizers die gebaseerd zijn op oudere beroemde synths van dezelfde fabrikant. Nu zijn de vernieuwde versies van de 303 en 909 aan de beurt. Hoewel het dus digitale versies betreft die volgens Roland de originele sounds dicht benaderen, moet ook hier de praktijk uitwijzen in hoeverre dat klopt. Voordeel is wel dat ze qua layout/uitstraling van deze apparaten duidelijk dicht bij de originelen zijn gebleven. Inclusief de bekende step sequencers. Groot nadeel is dat de apparaten een stuk kleiner zijn dan hun voorgangers. Gezien de grote hoeveelheid knoppen en controllers is dat wellicht een lastige combi. In deze zelfde reeks is er ook een nieuwe vocoder te krijgen; de VP-03. Ideaal voor interessante effecten. Aanvullende info is te vinden op Roland’s Boutique pagina.
TT-99 en DJ-99
TT-99 & DJ-99
Draaitafel en DJ-mixer in 909 design. Wat kan ik hierover zeggen? Leuk voor de liefhebbers van speciale edities en die duidelijke 909 kleuren, maar daar is alles wel mee gezegd.
Het is “gewoon” een platenspeler en een eenvoudige 2-kanaals mixer. Geen bijzondere extra’s, en afgezien van de uitstraling ook niet echt interessant, wat mij betreft. Roland is nou niet bepaald bekend om haar DJ mixers en platenspelers. Ook in dit geval lijkt het niet zo’n heel bijzonder product te zijn. Leuk voor de liefhebbers, laten we het daar op houden. Bekijk de apparaten op Roland’s bijbehorende pagina’s voor de TT-99 en de DJ-99.
Tot slot
Je ziet het, Roland heeft flink uitgepakt. Of alle apparaten even nuttig zijn zal moeten blijken. Of de uiteindelijke verkoopprijzen redelijk zijn ook. Onder de streep is er een heleboel nieuws te krijgen, maar of het ook vervangers worden van de iconische voorgangers, dat blijft de grote vraag. Voor producers die wat minder te besteden hebben zal het een interessant alternatief zijn. Leuk, zo’n originele 303 of 909, maar tussen de 2000 en 3000 Euro uitgeven aan een tweedehands apparaat van 30 jaar oud is niet voor iedereen weggelegd. Deze nieuwe apparaten zullen hopelijk een redelijk alternatief vormen en misschien de prijzen van de oude apparaten wat drukken. Voor de producers onder ons zijn er echter een heleboel haalbare alternatieven.
Of Roland hiermee dus opnieuw een tijdloze reeks uitbrengt blijft een discussiepunt. Maar interessant is het zeker! Als je een van die nieuwe apparaten wilt aanschaffen kan ik daarom maar 1 goede tip geven; probeer ze in het echt uit en oordeel zelf! Neem ook even een kijkje via de links, om wat meer info te krijgen. Wie weet zit er geweldig “speelgoed” voor jou tussen.

Roland celebrates 909 day
As many of you have probably noticed, Roland just launched a whole series of new devices. 909 day, on the 9th of september, was the start for a whole new line of gear. The whole line can be found on Roland’s 909 day page.
909 drumcomputer
909 refers to the type number of one of the most famous drumcomputers ever made in the history of electronic dance music: the TR-909. This is a drumcomputer that has been out of production for several decades and is only available on the second hand market, if you are lucky. And they don’t come cheap, as you can imagine. Same thing goes for several other devices from that same line: the TB-303 (acid) and TR-808. Some time ago, Roland tried to revive these iconic machines in the form of the Aira line. One of those was the TR-8 drumcomputer; basically a hybrid version of the 808 and 909. Together with the TB-3, a digital version of the famous TB-303.
Even though all these new devices were digital (not analogue), many producers were quite excited about it. The machines were quite good. Big disadvantage was the “carnval-look” of these same devices; a whole lot of bright couloured lights and those green accents that are typical for the entire Aira line. Not everyone was happy about that. It makes the machines look like “toys”. But now there’s another new line of products. A DJ-808 mixer/controller with built in step sequencer. A System-8 synthesizer, the V-1SD video switcher/controller, a TT-99 turntable (in 909 colours) and DJ-99 mixer (2-channel dj mixer with 909 colours) and several synthesizers (TR-09/TB-03) plus a vocoder (VP-03). Most of these devices are clearly based on previous Roland gear.
In this week’s blog I’ll name a few of them, just to give you an idea of what’s coming.
DJ-808
dj-808 mixer/controller
A DJ mixer and controller. Designed to perfectly work with Serato’s DJ software. Additionally it has a built-in drumcomputer with step sequencer, 4 channels, trigger pads and a voice transformer. Interesting idea, because it combines DJ-ing and the option to add live drums/samples. A portable all-in-1 solution. But the most heard comments from DJ’s and producers alike is that it has a lot of options crammed into a small space. This makes it look very “busy”. The fact that Roland clearly continues with its Aira look (bright colours and green accents) was not appreciated by everyone. Not to mention the question if there is actually a big market for this kind of device. Time will tell. Have a closer look at Roland’s DJ-808 product page.
System-8
System-8 synthesizer
An 8-voice synthesizer with 3 oscillators, filters, effects and versatile LFO’s, many controls and an onboard arpeggiator, CV/Gate outputs, vocoder and polyphonic step sequencer. Additional options like Roland’s “plug-out” system give you the sounds of several Roland classics. It comes with the Jupiter-8 and Juno-106 sounds when you buy it. Easily connectable to other gear and filled with new features. It is, however, probably going to be quite expensive. Behringers Deepmind synthesizer that I already mentioned in a previous blog, is cheaper and a reasonable alternative. Theoretically this is quite a nice machine; but wether that also translates to the real world is uncertain. We’ll have to wait and see. More info can be found on the System-8 product page.
TR-09 and TB-03
TB-03 & TR-09 gear
In recent years Roland released several similar products already; the Boutique product line. A series of small portable synthesizers based on older famous synths from the same company. And now we get new versions of the classic 303 and 909 machines. Roland says they will get very close to the original sounds, despite the fact that the new versions are al digital. We’ll have to wait and see. The new layout/design stays very close to the originals too, including the well known step sequencers, so that is a good thing. They are, however, a lot smaller than their older brothers. Together with the amount of buttons/controls it might even be a bit too small. In the same product line there’s also a new vocoder; the VP-03. Ideal for interesting effects. Additional info on these machines can be found on Roland’s Boutique page.
TT-99 and DJ-99
TT-99 & DJ-99
A turntable and dj mixer in 909 design. What else can I say about this? Funny gadgets for anyone that loves special editions or 909 design, but that’s about it.
They are just that; a “normal” turntable and very simple dj mixer. No interesting extras, and apart from the nice colours and design not very interesting, as far as I’m concerned. Roland has never been a big player in the world of DJ turntables and DJ mixers, so there’s no big innovations to be found here. Just a nice gimmick for those of us that are crazy about anything that has to do with the 909. More info is available on Roland’s TT-99 and DJ-99 product page.
Finally
As you can see, Roland added a lot of new stuff to their product lines. Wether all of these machines are equally useful remains unclear. The same thing goes for the final sales prices. There are a lot of interesting developments but we will have to wait and see if this closes the gap left by the original machines several decades ago. For producers that don’t have big funding it will probably be an interesting alternative. Great to have, an original 303 or 909, but paying 2000 to 3000 Euros for a second hand machine that is 30 years old is simply not an option for many of us. These new versions will hopefully form reasonable alternative and might even lower the prices of the originals a bit. Nowadays there are many more affordable option for producers.
So the big question remains: will this be another timeless range of machines? They are very interesting nevertheless! If you are thinking of buying one of these new machines I can only give you one simple advice: try them in real life before you buy, and judge for yourself!
